About this book

Insect Detective offers an exquisite glimpse into the strange and wonderful world of insects. Right now, all around you, thousands of insects are doing strange and wonderful things. But you can't always see them straight away. Sometimes you have to know where to look... This wonderful book, illustrated by Charlotte Voake and written by Steve Voake, tells us all about the different kinds of insects hiding away in your garden and how to recognize them. It's full of glorious detail, but remember – if it doesn't have six legs, it's not an insect!

Insect Detective is the winner of the 2010 English 4-11 Best Illustrated Book Award in the Key Stage 1 Non-fiction category.

Biography

Steve Voake grew up in Midsomer Norton, near Bath, Somerset. In order to find time to write his first novel, The Dreamwalker's Child, Steve used to get up at 3 a.m. and work for several hours before anyone else was awake. He has written two sequels, The Web of Fire and The Starlight Conspiracy. Steve became a full-time writer in 2005 and has written the Daisy Dawson books for Walker.

Charlotte Voake was born and raised in Wales. She says that book illustration is "the only thing I ever wanted to do," and certainly has made a brilliant career of it. Skipping formal training in art, she studied art history at London University and worked at a gallery before embarking on a freelance career in illustration. Her illustrations are widely loved for their gentle wit, quiet observation, airy exuberance and utter charm. Her picture books include Ginger, winner of the Smarties Prize and its prequel, Ginger Finds a Home. More recently, Charlotte has written and illustrated Tweedle Dee Dee; Hello Twins, winner of the British Book Design and Production Award; and Pizza Kittens, winner of the Smarties Prize.
