About this book

Language: German

Without human intervention Central Europe would be a vast forest, and thus fairly species-poor. Around 10,000 years ago however, people began to intervene in undisturbed natural areas and to use them, and over time created a mosaic of different landscapes – the cultural landscapes. This patchwork of different habitats became the basis of a rich flora and fauna.

Orchards and cottage gardens, colourful waysides and village ponds, heaths and hedges, pollard willows and gravel pits, dry grass and coppices – with exciting texts and beautiful pictures Bruno P. Kremer introduces the highlights of our cultural landscapes. The focus is on the special ecological value of each living space. The typical animal and plant species complement the portraits of the landscape elements.

In a time when the rich diversity of cultural landscapes greatly decreases due to population growth and intensive farming , the author defends the protection and conservation of this precious landscape.
