About this book

If the bumble bee is to flourish, one place that can become its haven is the garden. Flowers, which are their food supply, are what every gardener grows. All gardeners aim to have flowers all the year round and in great variety which is what bumble bees, and lots of other insects, need before anything else. However bumble bees must also produce the next generation if they are to survive and what they seek as nest sites are not what the average gardener would consider to be "neat and tidy". Bumble bees are like old mouse nests, holes in the ground, clumps of dead grass and untidy hedge bottoms. They are also fussy about what will make a good nest. Any old hole will not do.

In Making Nests for Bumble Bees we show gardeners and others how to provide a bee with a suitable home in a garden or elsewhere, even if they have already ruined several sites by tidying up.

Chapters include: Life and times of bumblebees; Feeding the bees in the nests; How they make their nests; Introducing queens into nests; Aftercare; and The effects of Pests and Pesticides.
