About this book

The aim of this book is to give general fauna data on Noctuidae known for the moment from Thailand based on the examination of collections and literature sources, compilation of catalogues and colour illustrations of Thai Noctuidae. This book is the third in the series Moths of Thailand initiated, supported and edited by Bro. Amnuay Pinratana.

The present catalogue is the first attempt to give a general survey of the family of Noctuidae in Thailand. Part one of the catalogue deals with quadrifine subfamilies complex which are dominant in South East Asia, namely, Herminiinae, Rivulinae, Hypeninae, Catocalinae (in broad sense), Aganainae, Euteliinase, Stictopterinae, Plusiinae and Pantheinae and also trifine subfamilies Acronictinae and Agaristinae. The catalogue includes 715 species above the mentioned subfamilies based on the examination of collections or reports in literature for Thailand. Among them 660 are illustrated in 42 colour plates. Fifty-five species are reported from Thailand based on literature sources or collections without revisions of the materials and without illustrations. Seventy-six species are reported as unidentified. The literature sources are referred to in notes. Most specimens shown in colour plates originated from Thailand. In some cases, however, where no specimens from Thailand are available, those from China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Sumatra or Borneo are used as substitutes. A total of 343 species from our list are formally reported for Thailand for the first time, although many of them may probably be present in some collections from Thailand, but not reported in the literature. Photographs of some recently collected or unidentified species are presented in additional plates 43 and 44.
