During the post-war period, intensified land use has been furthered primarily by spatial segregation of functions. Growing land pressure and environmental problems have made this strategy problematic and a paradigm of integrated multifunctional use of landscapes is emerging. This challenges a variety of disciplines and requires interdisciplinary cooperation on complex landscape research.
