About this book

Language: German with bilingual summary in English and German

Shatter-cones represent the only reliable macroscopic evidence of impact- resp. shock metamorphosis, and are therefore used worldwide for the discovery and verification of impact craters.

The authors carried out investigations on shatter cones of the Ries impact, which were formed within Upper Jurassic limestones. These shatter cones (or "Strahlenkalke" in German) have been found at different distances from the Ries impact center. The locations of the investigated shatter cones are laying on a shatter cone-bearing ray of Upper Jurassic limestones, extending from the Ries impact crater to a distance of about 180 km south-southwest of the impact crater center.

Furthermore it can be stated that with increasing distance to the Ries impact center the percentage of stratigraphic older ejecta material (Middle Jurassic, Lower Jurassic and Upper Triassic rocks) also increase along the shatter cone-bearing ray of the Nördlinger Ries.
