About this book

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is charged with cleaning up contaminated sites and disposing of radioactive waste remaining as an environmental legacy of former nuclear weapons development and production. Within the DOE, the Environmental Management Science Program (EMSP) has sought to advance scientific knowledge and technological solutions to significantly reduce environmental cleanup costs, schedules, and risks. This symposium series book presents leading-edge research in the area of nuclear waste management conducted through the EMSP. The chapters are organized into four sections, focusing on (1) characterization, monitoring, and analysis techniques, (2) separations chemistry and technology, (3) facility inspection, decontamination, and decommissioning, as well as materials science, and (4) modeling and waste treatment chemistries. The selected contributors invited from the overall DOE EMSP portfolio of 361 projects represent work being done across the country in universities and the Federally Funded Research and Development Centers.
