Sigmatism is a neologism for the school of phytosociology established by Josias Braun-Blanquet in 1930, known as "Station Internationale de Géobotanique Méditerranéenne et Alpine" (SIGMA, International station for Mediterranean and Alpine geobotany).

Twenty-five years have passed since the publication of Bruno de Foucault's Petit Manuel d'Initiation à la Phytosociologie Sigmatiste in 1984, followed by Initiation à la Phytosociologíe Sigmatiste written by Christian Lahondère in 1997. These two books were a great success and quickly sold out. These authors pioneered the development, dissemination and pedagogy of phytosociology within the French Société Botanique du Centre-Ouest.

This Petit Précis de Phytosociologíe Sigmatiste is a continuation of the two previous works. Its publication is timely at the centenary of sigmatist phytosociology. After a brief overview of the history of sigmatist phytosociology, the book presents the principles of the surveys and the different modern methods of treatment of the records using concrete examples, allowing the naturalist anxious to learn the method of phytosociological surveys how to work concretely on the ground and learn this approach. For the confirmed phytosociologist, this précis is an excellent aide-memoire of the different stages of the method and the exploitation of the records.

Given the brevity and pedagogical quality of the writing, this document could serve as a reference for all phytosociologists wishing to share this science or to teach the principles.

Vingt-cinq années se sont écoulées depuis la parution du Petit Manuel d'Initiation à la Phytosociologie Sigmatiste de Bruno de Foucault en 1984, suivi par Initiation à la Phytosociologíe Sigmatiste de Christian Lahondère en 1997. Ces deux ouvrages connurent un vif succès au point d'ètre épuisés très rapidement après leur parution. Leurs auteurs ont été les pionniers de l'essor, de la diffusion et de la pédagogie de la phytosociologie au sein de la Société Botanique du Centre-Ouest.

Ce Petit Précis de Phytosociologíe Sigmatiste s'inscrit dans la continuité des deux ouvrages précédents. Sa parution tombe à point nommé au moment du centenaire de la phytosociologie sigmatiste. Après un bref rappel de l`histoire de la phytosociologie sigmatiste, les principes des relevés et les différentes méthodes modernes de traitement des relevés sont présentés à partir d'exemples concrets permettant au naturaliste soucieux de s'initier à la méthode des relevés phytosociologiques de travailler concrètement sur le terrain et de s'approprier la démarche. Pour le phytosociologue confirmé, ce précis constitue un excellent aide-mémoire des différentes étapes de la méthode et de l'exploitation des relevés.

Eu égard à la concision et à la qualité pédagogique de la rédaction, ce document pourra servir de référence à tous les phytosociologues désireux de faire partager cette science ou d`en enseigner les principes.
