Covering over 400 species, this work presents all of the terrestrial mammal species of the Western Palearctic, serving as an excellent guide to the great wealth of fauna in this region.

Species accounts are concise and authoritative, giving information on size, distribution, habitat, behaviour, reproduction and feeding. Each account is supported by distribution maps and superb illustrations. The book features over 100 plates, comprising of over 600 colour species artworks. Variation between the sexes is illustrated and anatomical diagrams are provided to assist identification.

Cet ouvrage présente toutes les espèces de mammifères de l’ouest de la zone paléarctique, à l’exclusion des cétacés. Si la zone paléarctique, la région de l’Ancien Monde autrefois soumise à l’influence des glaciations du Quaternaire, correspond pour une grande part à l’Europe qu’elle couvre complètement, elle y associe également le nord de l’Afrique et le Proche-Orient, c’est-à-dire une bonne partie de l’Asie mineure. De ce fait, cet ouvrage est plus qu’un nouveau guide des mammifères d’Europe. Il y associe des régions naturelles qui la prolongent mais qui sont rarement couvertes par les guides contemporains. En effet, les guides africains oublient souvent l’Afrique du Nord et les guides asiatiques sont classiquement centrés sur la zone orientale, c’est-à-dire l’Asie tropicale. Ce guide couvre donc une région géographique rarement présentée dans son ensemble et comble ainsi une lacune.
