Repatriation of Kew Herbarium Data for the Flora of Northeastern Brazil Series

Preliminary List of the Myrtaceae in Northeastern Brazil

Volume:  5
By:  Eve Lucas, Teonildes Nunes and Eimear Nic Lughadha

For historical reasons, many South American plant species were originally described from collections lodged in European herbaria. These important specimens. and the data associated with them. are not easily accessible to researchers in the countries from which they were taken.

By databasing material and repatriating data and images of type specimens to Northeastern Brazil, capacity for biodiversity research at a local level is built and contributes significantly to the identification of areas of high species diversity and endemism - essential for conservation planning.

Digitization of specimens and data has been undertaken by Brazilian Repatriation Officers who, whilst completing their one-year placements at Kew, have used the opportunity to develop their own specific taxonomic research.
