The NHBS annual Backlist Bargains sale ends at midnight on Saturday 31st March!
Our most popular annual sale features more than 3000 books from major publishers at greatly reduced prices. From field guides to monographs, Devon to Antarctica, and ornithology to marine life, this is the perfect opportunity to fill the gaps in your collection with forgotten gems and recent classics.
Signed copies of Peter Marren's Chasing the Ghost available from NHBS
Join renowned naturalist Peter Marren on an exciting quest to see every species of wild plant native to Britain.
Some people decide to go skydiving when they turn fifty. Others travel to a long dreamed-of place: Antarctica, perhaps, or the Galapagos. Others run the London Marathon. But to mark his most significant birthday, Peter Marren decided on an entirely different sort of mid-life challenge: to track down the last fifty British wild plants he'd yet to see, having ticked off the first 1,400 over a half-century well spent rummaging in hedges, slipping down gullies and peering into peat bogs.
This expert and emotional journey takes him the length and the breadth of the British Isles, searching for our most elusive plants. He travels from Skye to the Scilly Isles, from mountain to forest floor – but does he manage to find them all?

Signed copies of Chasing the Ghost are available from NHBS while stocks last.

Return of pine martens provides hope for Britain’s red squirrels
Research published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B earlier this months suggests that the presence of pine martens suppresses local grey squirrels, which could be instrumental in helping red squirrels re-populate Britain.

Feeding wildlife significantly impacts migration and spread of parasites
New research has raised concerns about how feeding wildlife, either intentionally with garden feeders or unintentionally through waste, can have a huge effect on both migration patterns and parasite transmission between resident and migratory populations.

eDNA as an early warning system for amphibian pathogens
Scientists at Washington State University are investigating the use of environmental DNA as a way to detect deadly amphibian pathogens in time to allow conservationists to save local populations before they are affected.
