On the NHBS Blog: The Big Bluebell Watch 2018
The Big Bluebell Watch is organised by the Woodland Trust and takes place from 2nd April until 31st May. In this nationwide survey, members of the public submit their bluebell sightings via an online map. The results will help the Woodland Trust monitor the status of native bluebells and guide future conservation efforts.
See our recent blogpost for more information about bluebells in the UK, as well as some tips on telling the difference between native and non-native species. Then head over to the Woodland Trust website to submit your findings.
Curlew Moon - Signed copies available while stocks last
Curlew Moon tells the wonderful story of Mary Colwell's walk across the British Isles to raise awareness of the Curlew, now one of our most endangered birds. Beginning in Ireland in the spring and concluding in Lincolnshire, Mary combines notes from her travels with an in-depth natural history of this evocative bird, all told in a voice which is both poetic and inspiring.

Signed copies of Curlew Moon are available from NHBS while stocks last.
205 million-year-old ichthyosaur jaw bone found in UK
A bone found on a Somerset beach in 2016 has been identified as belonging to a giant ichthyosaur, one of the largest animals ever to have lived. The finding has also solved the mystery of several other bones discovered in the 1850s which were previously thought to be from land-based reptiles.

Species with extreme sex differences are more vulnerable to extinction
By studying species from the fossil record, it has been found that species with the most distinct sex differences experience extinction at a rate that is roughly ten times higher than species with fewer sex differences. These findings may have important implications for conservation efforts.

Nature reserves and protected areas should be expanded by 10% every decade
Speaking in advance of the 2020 Biodiversity Conference in Beijing, Cristiana Paşca Palmer, executive secretary for the Convention on Biological Diversity, has recommended that at least half of the world should be made more nature-friendly by 2015 to ensure the future wellbeing of humanity.

New Books at NHBS
A fully up-to-date and comprehensive photographic guide to the Snakes of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Lavishly illustrated with 387 colour photographs, it includes coverage of all 122 snake species found in these regions.
Covering over 670 species found in Taiwan and its surrounding islands, this new English edition of A Field Guide to the Birds of Taiwan features stunning artwork, approximately 190 annotated colour plates and updated distribution maps.
The Ascent of Birds: How Modern Science is Revealing their Story is divided into self-contained chapters, or stories, that collectively encompass the evolution of modern birds from their origins in Gondwana, over 100 million years ago, to the present day.
Our Place: Can We Save British Nature Before it is Too Late? looks to the future as well as exploring the past. It asks searching questions like who owns the land and why? And who benefits from green policies? Above all it attempts to solve a puzzle: why do the British seem to love their countryside more than almost any other nation?
The second edition of Chameleons of Africa is a magnificent, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated survey of these compelling animals. The book clearly lays out the taxonomy of the various genera and species and maps are provided to show their distributions.
Equipment Highlight
This large, easy-to-read, trigger-action clinometer is ideal for educational groups and will allow students to measure slopes and vertical angles.

Ticks of Europe and North Africa includes descriptive keys for identifying every stage of all the species of tick reported in Europe and northern Africa. It includes descriptive texts on the ecology and prominent features of each species, together with illustrations and distribution maps.
Flora Corner
Immersing himself in the beauty of Britain's woodlands and the art and writing they have inspired, in Oak and Ash and Thorn Peter Fiennes explores our long relationship with the woods and the sad and violent story of how so many have been lost.
