New article on the Hoopoe blog: Rewilding
Rewilding  provokes great debate among conservationists and several recently published books on this issue are likely to provide more fuel for future discussion. There is general agreement that rewilded landscapes should replicate those which existed before major human interference; one of the biggest challenges, however, lies in establishing what those landscapes looked like.

In our recent blogpost Guy Freeman, editor of British Wildlife, sketches out the framework in which this debate takes place and suggests some further reading around the subject.
Conservation Land Management redesigned for 25th Anniversary

Conservation Land Management (CLM) first went to print in the spring of 1993 and is now celebrating its 25th Anniversary. The Spring 2018 issue of the magazine has been redesigned with a new cover, more pages, and a more practical size - all for the same low price.
Published quarterly, CLM covers a wide variety of practical conservation issues for those involved in land management. It features up-to-date case studies, useful information such as costings, materials and equipment, along with regular features including event listings, details of new products and conference and event reports. CLM is essential reading for land managers, site managers and consultants.

Themes covered in the latest issue:
  • The origins of CLM
  • Restoring wood pasture
  • Farming for biodiversity
  • Soils and flood management
Hedgehog Awareness Week 2018
Hedgehog Awareness Week runs from 6th – 12th May and is organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. Why not get involved this year? You can hold a coffee morning or other fundraising event, educate yourself or others by posting leaflets in your area, donate money, or make your garden hedgehog-friendly.

See our recent blog post for full details, including how to tell if hedgehogs are visiting your garden with our new Mammal Footprint Tunnel.
Near-total neonicotinoid ban agreed in EU
EU member states have voted in favour of a near-total ban on the use of neonicotinoids in the EU. This is in response to numerous scientific studies linking their use to the decline of honeybees and other important pollinators.

One more fungal spore could spell disaster for Europe’s ash trees
A comprehensive study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, looking at the genetic diversity of remaining European ash trees, has stated that the introduction of even a single additional fungal fruiting body could be disastrous for these trees.

Hope for the future of biodiversity conservation
A paper produced by a senior conservation ecologist from the World Conservation Society has suggested that current trends toward population stabilisation, alleviation of poverty and increased urbanisation could provide hope for the conservation of wild spaces and species.
