Abernethy Forest: The History and Ecology of an Old Scottish Pinewood
Published by the Centre for Conservation Science of the RSPB, Abernethy Forest: The History and Ecology of an Old Scottish Pinewood provides a richly illustrated account of the history and ecology of one of the last remaining primeval forests in Scotland.
Illustrated with historical and recent photographs as well as graphs and maps, the book opens with a description of the physical geography and history of the forest and addresses both the man-made and natural processes that have shaped the forest.
Listening in the Field
The newly published Listening In The Field by Joeri Bruyninckx explores the evolution of sound recording into a scientific technique for studying the songs and calls of wild birds, and asks what it means to listen to animal voices as a scientist.

Read our blogpost by NHBS equipment team member Johnny Mitchell to find out more about the history and current status of field recording along with some book and equipment suggestions.

Global coral reef monitoring system to be launched

Devastating drop in numbers of Shetland seabirds
Since 2000 the number of puffins in Shetland has dropped from 33,000 to only 570, a trend that has also been observed in other species such as kittiwakes, fulmars and guillemots. The disappearance of food sources is thought to be the main cause of these devastating declines.

Working towards the acceptance of wolves in Sweden
A new study, published in Biological Conservation, has highlighted areas of Sweden which would be suitable for wolves to be redistributed in order to reduce densities and the resulting conflicts in regions where they are currently abundant.
