In this edition: Our annual Backlist Bargains promotion is back with a great selection of nearly 2000 titles from major publishers at steep discounts; with the arrival of the book Rays of the World we are highlighting the great publishing programme of Comstock Publishing Associates, and new stock of field guides to Gaoligongshan and Cyprus has arrived. We really like the Exped Cloudburst waterproof backpack for all-weather excursions.

Backlist Bargains 2017
Many publishers have large stocks of books which they have difficulty in marketing adequately when they pass from frontlist to backlist. Our Backlist Bargains promotion brings what are often very significant texts to the attention of a committed audience, who may have missed them on publication or wish to fill gaps in their holdings. Our close collaboration with major publishers for this project means that we can reduce prices on these titles substantially for a limited period, in many cases by up to 60%.

This is therefore a golden opportunity to snap up at remarkable discounts some of the key publications of the recent past on nearly 2,000 field guides, monographs, scientific textbooks and more, covering a broad range of topics in ornithology, entomology, mammalian biology, zoology, evolution, ecology, and botany.

Publishers taking part in Backlist Bargains include University Presses and Academic publishers (e.g. OUP, CUP, Princeton, Wiley), as well as major natural history publishers and imprints (e.g. HarperCollins, Bloomsbury, A&C Black, WildGuides).
Backlist Bargain sale highlights:
Comstock Publishing Associates - a publisher profile
Siri Scientific Press
Comstock Publishing dates back to 1893, when Simon Henry Gage and John Henry Comstock joined forces to found Comstock Publishing Company in New York. From the beginning, Comstock made textbooks on microscopy, histology, and entomology available at reasonable prices.

Today, Comstock is an imprint of Cornell University Press, and still produces outstanding natural history titles. With each new book that arrives at NHBS, we are amazed at the high production quality and great value, and the latest book Rays of the World, co-published with CSIRO in Australia, is testament to this.

The Future of the Natural Environment after the EU Referendum

A gibbon living in the tropical forests of south west China is a new species of primate
The animal has been studied for some time, but new research confirms it is different from all other gibbons.
It has been named the Skywalker hoolock gibbon - partly because the Chinese characters of its scientific name mean "Heaven's movement" but also because the scientists are fans of Star Wars. The study is published in the American Journal of Primatology.

First butterfly sightings of 2017
2017's earliest sightings of resident and common migrant butterflies, as reported to Butterfly Conservation. First sightings have been reported (Peacock, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell). Butterflies must be seen outside and be active (i.e. not in hibernation).
