An interview with Benedict Macdonald
Did you know that 94% of Britain isn’t built upon, that Snowdonia is larger and emptier than the Maasai Mara National Reserve, or that Scotland’s deer estates alone cover an area twice the size of Yellowstone National Park?  Rebirding is a bold roadmap to reverse the decline of bird populations in Britain, suggesting we need to restore ecosystems, rather than modify farmland.

Author Benedict Macdonald offered his valuable time to answer our questions concerning this important new contribution to the discussion of rewilding.
NHBS Guide to Night Vision & Thermal Optics

Thermal imaging devices are becoming increasingly common in ecological surveys due to their ability to produce an image in daylight, complete darkness or through fog. Night vision technologies mainly produce a monochromatic green or greyscale although some newer technologies are now able to capture colour images in extremely-low light conditions.

To learn more about these devices products, and how to choose the best one for your needs, see our guide to night vision and thermal imaging

Supporting Conservation: National Museum of Brazil
After a terrible fire destroyed the National Museum of Brazil, NHBS coordinated an effort to donate  items that are critical to the research at the museum. We contacted suppliers asking them to contribute, agreed to supply our own manufactured products, and cover shipping costs of all donated items.

The response from suppliers was fantastic and we have been able to send donations from Elsevier, BIOTOPE Parthenope, Brunel Microscopes Ltd, BugDorm, CABI Publishing, Harvard University Press, the Royal Museum for Central Africa, Watkins & Doncaster and EntoSphinx.

Bilby burrows

Australian researchers have found that the burrows made by the Greater Bilby serve as ‘outback oases’ for birds, reptiles and more. Camera traps have captured over 45 species spending time at the burrows, including the Dwarf Bearded Dragon. The authors say these burrows and their entrances can be an important source of shelter in arid regions, especially after wildfires.

Bee diversity

Researchers in Southern Oregon have demonstrated that wild bee abundance and diversity increases with local fire severity in the Douglas Fire Complex – a fire-prone landscape. The results showed that 20 times more individuals and 11 times more species were captured in areas that experienced high fire severity relative to areas with the lowest fire severity.

Climate impacts biodiversity

Paleontologists in Copenhagen and Helsinki have devised a new method that can provide unprecedented accuracy in the portrayal of biodiversity fluctuations on geological time scales. It is now possible to compare the impact of climate on global biodiversity in the distant past – a result that paints a gloomy picture for the preservation of present-day species richness.
