New Bird, Bat and Bee Boxes for 2019
Providing nesting and roosting spaces for our wildlife is increasingly important as natural habitats diminish. There is a huge range of boxes for birds, bats and even bees available today, which can be sited almost anywhere: gardens, within the walls of a new building and even free-standing.

Publisher of the month for April 2019

NHBS are delighted to announce the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI) as our Publisher of the Month for April.

The BSBI has a long and illustrious history as a publisher of books and periodicals aimed at both professional and amateur botanists. Their range includes handbooks, stand-alone titles, atlases and key reference books.

Find out more in our blogpost.

Out Now - Bats: An illustrated Guide To All Species
From the Giant Golden-crowned Flying Fox to the aptly named Bumblebee Bat (the world's smallest mammal), the number and diversity of bat species is rich and varied. This richly illustrated handbook offers profiles of 300 bats and detailed summaries of all the species identified to date. A fascinating guide, exploring their natural history and unique adaptations to life on the wing.

Fluorescence Frogs

A team of researchers have discovered that the Pumpkin Toadlet has skin which glows under UV light. It is thought this miniature frog uses their glow as a communication tool to attract mates, as it was recently shown that they are unable to hear mating calls.

Genetic Reserve for Scotland

The first UK genetic conservation area has been announced as the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve in Wester Ross, Scotland. The reserve aims to protect the unique DNA fingerprint of the area’s totemic Scots Pine trees – the national tree of Scotland.

Decreasing Dutch Butterflies

A recent study has provided evidence that over 130 years the number of butterflies have fallen by 84% in the Netherlands. Analysis of a long-term data set and more recent scientific data have confirmed this loss, which adds to the growing evidence of insect decline in Western Europe.
