About this book

Language: Spanish

Conceived as paradigms of sustainability, protected areas have as their priority the conservation of biodiversity. But the processes that threaten these natural spaces are diverse and varied: their fragmentation due to the expansion of urban areas and the construction of road infrastructures, their insular nature, climate change, forest fires, the increase in public use, the overexploitation of aquifers, the deterioration of water quality or the depletion of fishery resources. Over time, the environmental uses of these areas has been extended to incorporate new functions of a social nature (linked to the improvement in the quality of life, education and health of local populations), economic (a centralized role in the creation and maintenance of employment and increase of per capita income), and institutional (to seek participatory and representative governance). Together with the environmental dimension, this book provides an original and complementary socio-economic approach, with which to globally evaluate the sustainability of these spaces and their diversity, as well as the effects that the declaration of protected areas in Spain has had. In this way, it offers a solid base to reinforce the collaboration between researchers and territorial planners, managers of protected areas and public decision-makers to guide sustainable territorial management.
