About this book

It is widely recognised that sustainable development can only be achieved if environmental, economic and social issues are combined in development plans, policies and programmes. This work examines this integrated approach to the development process, and analyzes the theory and practice of integrating assessment techniques and decision-making. The editors begin by presenting an introduction to integrated appraisal in development strategies as well as outlining issues which are important to the future understanding and practical application of integrated appraisal. A group of authors from a range of disciplinary and country backgrounds then present alternative perspectives and methods of an integrated approach to sustainable development, and apply integrated appraisal to a variety of case studies from developing and transitional countries.

Integrated appraisal, decision-making and sustainable development - an overview. Part 1 Integrated appraisal and decision-making: alternative perspectives and methods; strengthening the integrated approach for impact assessments in development co-operation; integrating cross-cutting issues in the environmental assessment of development assistance projects; environmental cost benefit analysis and sustainability; sustainability assessment through integration of environmental assessment with other forms of appraisal; integrating environmental, economic and social appraisal in the real world; integrating appraisals of planned developments into decision-making in countries in transition. Part 2 Case studies: environmental impact assessment within a multi-national enterprise; environmental and social impact assessment in a remote, timber-dependent community in Guyana; evaluating trade-offs between uses of marine protected areas in the Caribbean; social acceptability in Project EIA in the Philippines; public valuation, and decentralised decision-making; a holistic approach to the evaluation of socio-economic and environmental impacts of technological change in agriculture.
