In this book, Senator John Kerry and his wife, the philanthropist Teresa Heinz, take an inspiring look at the ways in which individuals and organisations are working to change the environment for the better.
In this inspirational new book, long-time environmental champions John and Teresa Kerry travel through America to celebrate some of the innovative pioneers, who are determined, as individuals, small groups, whole towns and even cities, to change their environment for the better. The chapters move from the Glacier National Park to the Powder River Basin, from the mesas of New Mexico to the South Bronx. It yokes together the story of what one person can achieve (i.e. the doctor who stopped the power station), to those responding to the greatest challenge of our era: global warming. The book shows how the more people gather together, the greater their potential achievement while at the same time confronting the scale of the environmental menace we face if we take no action.
John Kerry has served four terms as Senator of Massachusetts, and in 2005 was Democratic nominee for President of the United States. A graduate of Yale and Boston College Law School, he is also a US Navy veteran who was decorated with 3 Purple Hearts for service in Vietnam. He has been praised as one of the leading environmentalists in the Senate. Teresa Heinz Kerry is chairman of the Howard Heinz Endowment and the Heinz Family Philanthropies, which are widely known for developing innovative strategies for protecting the environment and improving education and the lives of young children. Teresa has received numerous awards for her work, including the Albert Schweitzer award for Humanitarianism. John and Teresa's mutual interest in environmental issues brought them together in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and they married in 1995.
John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry have written a book that is a profound challenge to all of us but contains - in the examples of the men and women who are fighting the great fight for a better future for our environment - the clear hope that if we can embrace their resourcefulness, determination, and essential patriotism, we will prevail.
