Peter Matthiessen, naturalist, explorer and writer was born in New York City in 1927. By the time he graduated from Yale University in 1950 he had already begun his writing career. He later attended the Sorbonne and co-founded the Paris Review. His expeditions to the Amazon, Africa, New Guinea and the Himalayas have been the background to the rich collection of studies of wildlife and of native peoples.
The author brings to the Siberian tiger the deep knowledge of and feeling for the natural world that has made classics of his previous books. He tells the story of the species' origin and evolution, evoking as well its crucial role in the culture and mythology of the peoples who came in contact with it.
