About this book

Language: Italian

An ant colony is an organized, efficient, autonomous, collaborative microcosm. A superorganism where individuals, by obeying simple rules, make complex collective behaviours emerge. Thus, thousands of ant species have colonized all corners of the earth. They build complex nests, cultivate, breed, know how to fight like a trained army without leaders. Our Homo sapiens societies are very different from those of ants. However, we can study the evolutionary success of these insects to invent practical applications useful to our species. The algorithms that are inspired by the rules of an anthill are useful in many areas, from Internet optimization to road traffic management. Ants know how to find the shortest way and avoid traffic jams. The rafts that form their bodies intertwining when the nest is flooded could inspire the design of new materials and self-assembling robots. Some species of ants could be used in the biological control of pests. New molecules that have been isolated from ant venom could be effective against super resistant pathogenic bacterial strains. There are thousands of different ways of being ant: fragments of nature that hide precious treasures of unimaginable beauty.
