About this book

Language: Spanish

Soil is a resource of great importance globally, and in the case of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is considered essential to meet the needs of a human population in continuous and rapid growth. It is estimated that the agricultural potential of LAC is 576 million hectares, of which 45% is in South America and 74% in Mesoamerica, and that it is affected by degradation processes. Climate change and anthropogenic pressure are the main factors driving these processes of soil degradation. To meet these challenges the EU is committed to contributing to executing the "Millennium Development Goals", thus supporting global sustainable development and the fight against poverty.

One of the key points of the European Union - Latin America and Caribbean programme was: "Sustainable Development: Environment, Climate Change and Energy". The European Commission (EC) said responded by creating the programme EUROCLIMA with the objective to extend the knowledge of the leaders and scientific community of Latin American on issues related to climate change. The program, managed by the Directorate General Development and Cooperation - EuropeAid, presents a scientific component that has been developed by the Joint Research Centre (DG Joint Research Centre, JRC). This includes the areas of water, bioenergy, agriculture, soils, and drought and desertification.

In order to raise awareness of the importance of soil, an essential part of natural capital, and to better understand the impact of climate change on it, the JRC at the request of the Directorate General for Development and Cooperation – EuropeAid, was responsible for the development of the first Atlas of soils in Latin America and the Caribbean, where soil scientists from LAC, Europe and the USA collaborated. Therefore this publication is a model of scientific cooperation. In addition to the completion of the Atlas, at the same time the project sought to stimulate cooperation among soil scientists in Latin America. The partnership was formalized with the creation of the Latin American Network of Soil Science consolidated in Rio de Janeiro in July 2011. The Atlas aims to reach the general public, the education sector and those responsible for environmental, agricultural and social policies, and make them aware of the importance of soil resources in LAC. The authors believe that this innovative publication will become a widely used reference and will be a key element for a better understanding of soil resources in LAC.
