About this book

Language: French

The biodiversity of the Comoros archipelago is still largely unknown to the general public, even though this archipelago is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, alongside Madagascar. The urgency of conservation is strong, and we must do more than ever to counter human pressures and global warming.

This book aims to compile a complete inventory of amphibians (2 species) and terrestrial reptiles (31 species) that colonized the Comoros archipelago and is therefore an essential knowledge tool for the preservation of its herpetological biodiversity. The authors have gathered all existing knowledge concerning the description, biology, ecology and distribution of species; this first atlas integrates in particular data from observations made during field campaigns carried out in 2018 and 2019 on the four islands of the archipelago.

The project was co-financed by the European BEST-RUP Fund and the Critical Ecosystems Partnership Fund (CEPF). It is the result of a fruitful collaboration between France (Mayotte), Germany (Zoological Museum of Munich) and the Union of the Comoros (Anjouan, Grande Comore, Mohéli), and combines the efforts of professional naturalists and local amateurs.
