About this book

Language: French

The fifth volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, originally published in 1755, is attributed to a suite of domestic animals. Four new species are considered here: the sheep, the goat, the pig and the dog. Once again Buffon deploys all his literary genius there, painting a portrait of each animal worthy of La Fontaine's Fables. But beyond these pieces of bravery, he deepens his reflection on fundamental scientific and philosophical questions, such as the place of man in nature, the insufficiencies of the classifications of naturalists or the legitimacy of recourse to final causes. Daubenton, for his part, tirelessly pursues his work of description.
