About this book

Language: English

From the preface:

"Since the inception of the Flora of Nepal Project in 1993, the Department of Plant Resources, Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation and the Central Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University are working together to build up the capable human resources for writing the Flora of Nepal. Later on, the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology also joined this endeavour as an important institution to excel the venture further still. The Royal Botanical Garden, Edinburgh, UK and the Society of Himalayan Botany, University Museum, University of Tokyo, Japan also joined this endeavour. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in 1999, between the collaborating institutions for the publication of the Flora of Nepal in 10 volumes. The first publication of the Flora of Nepal (Vol. 3: Magnoliaceae – Rosaceae) was published in 2011 and three other volumes (4, 7 and 10) are in process. The lead role of the publication of volume 10 has been entrusted to Nepal.

Some of the capacity building projects such as the Darwin Initiative and other training workshops have been conducted. Although the aim of such trainings was to enhance the capacity of Nepalese scientists involved in writing the Flora, we still feel the need for further trainings to increase the knowledge and skills of the personnel. Realizing the need of a training program for the contributors of volume 10 in particular, a training workshop on Flora Writing was jointly organized on November 9-21, 2014 by the Department of Plant Resources, Central Department of Botany and Nepal Academy of Science and Technology. The objective of the workshop was to build up the capacity of Nepalese botanists involved in the Flora write up by providing basic and advanced knowledge of plant taxonomy as well as evaluate the progress of assigned work of contributors for volume l0.There were 30 participants from the three partner institutions. This manual on Flora writing is an outcome of the workshop. We added some invited papers to fulfil the gap in this manual in addition to papers used in the workshop by the resource persons. We believe that this manual will be useful as a reference book to students and teachers of plant science, as well as researchers, policy and decision makers, and the general public interested in plant taxonomy and Flora writing."
