About this book

Language: Swedish, with English abstracts and identification keys

Most bristle worms, or polychaetes, are free-swimming, active hunters or passive sedimentivores. One of the most common active hunters is the ragworm (Hediste diversicolor or "bakborstig rovmask" in Swedish) that can be found at the shores under rocks and flattened seaweed.

Another polychaete, called bakfotsmasken in Swedish, lives in Gullmarsfjorden (a fjord on the west coast of Sweden), the North Sea and around the British Isles. The name has been given for its big "feet" behind the body. The bakfotsmasken has sea crayfish and lobster as a host animal and is beneficial to these because it keeps gills and eggs clean from bacteria and microalgae. There are also parasitic polychaetes, an example is a species called the "vampyrmasken" in Swedish, which feeds by extracting blood and bodily fluids from its host, another polychaete. In the mouth there are many teeth that act as an anchoring device on the host animal.

There are around 14,000 described polychaete species, of which about 500 are found in Swedish waters. This volume treats the 205 species belonging to the subclass Aciculata.
