About this book

Nematinae is a subfamily of sawflies in the family Tenthredinidae, containing about 1250 species. Identification of species and even genera in the subfamily has remained difficult and recent molecular data has revealed extensive incongruencies with previous generic classifications. Here we expand previous molecular sequence datasets to reconstruct the phylogeny of Nematinae and use only well-supported relationships as a guide to establishing the limits of genera, in a way that we hope to be taxonomically more stable than previously. As a result, the number of extant genera is reduced from 45 to 31, mainly because of broader definitions of Euura and Pristiphora, which together comprise over 75% of the species of Nematinae. Especially in the case of Euura, numerous new combinations of species names are required. To facilitate identification of the newly redefined genera, we provide an extensively illustrated key.
