About this book

Language: Dutch

Soldier flies (Stratiomyidae) are a very diverse family of flies appearance-wise. Their size ranges from 2-20 mm, their appearance can be slim, but also robust, metal-colored to black, yellow, green, orange and black-and-white. They have a number of characteristics in common: The so-called discal cell in the wing, the wing edge vein (costa) at the trailing edge of the wing is weakly developed and they do not possess a scale on the thorax just behind the wing implant. The habitus drawing in this table by Jeroen de Rond give a good picture of the different types within this family fly.
