About this book

The idea of Wild Flowers, Waterplants and Grasses of the Okavango Delta and Kalahari is to provide a handy, easy-to-use guidebook for tour guides, tourists and students. The aim was to keep the book as 'travel friendly' as possible, ideal for game walks and easy size to carry in a suitcase. A small pocket-sized book limits the amount of information and the size of the photographs. A compromise was therefore reached by limiting the number of pages and placing three plants on a page. My aim was to provide one book that includes all the common herbaceous (nonwoody) plants of the Okavango Delta, Chobe, Makgadikgadi pans and the Kalahari.

Since the book includes a variety of plant species ranging from water plants, wild flowers, tuberous food- and water plants as well as grasses, it was a challenge placing them in such a way that they will be easily accessible. There is therefore a separate 'quick reference' photographic list of the water plants with page references on pg 6-8. The grasses were placed in a separate section (pg 98-119).

The rest of the book is colour-coded. The plants that have inconspicuous flowers and those which are mostly green, were placed in the green section (the sedges and ferns were included in this group). The other sections – white, yellow, red, pink and blue – are based on the colour of the flowers. Wild Flowers, Waterplants and Grasses of the Okavango Delta and Kalahari includes 322 plant species.

Each colour group is presented in alphabetical family groups starting for example with the Asteraceae and ending with Zygophyllaceae. These families are indicated in the colour strip at the bottom of the page. This arrangement has the unfortunate consequence that all the members of one family do not appear together in the book. However, on pg 3 and 4 all plants in this book are listed in their family groups, with page references.

The English, Setswana and Afrikaans common names of each plant were provided where available and there is an index of Setswana names on pg 121. Wild Flowers, Waterplants and Grasses of the Okavango Delta and Kalahari focuses on the medicinal, food and other uses. The uses are listed alphabetically on pg 126, making it handy as a kind of 'survival guide' in the bush.
