Little owls (Athene noctua) are found throughout England and Wales, most commonly in central, Southern and South-Eastern regions. They can often be seen throughout the day, perched on branches or telegraph poles. Little owls typically breed in copses, hedgerows, parks and gardens in holes in buildings and trees. They have been found to readily use nest boxes in many areas, particularly if natural nesting cavities are scarce.
This sturdy nest box is manufactured from exterior grade plywood with a bitumen covered lid for added protection. The 7cm entrance hole is the ideal size for this species but is small enough to prevent access by tawny owls. It also has a separate nesting area at the rear of the box which is beneficial for little owls who prefer to nest in dark cavities.
The Little Owl Nest Box should be located on a horizontal branch at a minimum height of 3 metres.
