About this book

Language: Dutch

In the first half of the 19th century the British artist and ornithologist John Gould travelled to Australia with his family, with the aim to collect as many birds as possible for his book series The Birds of Australia. This series is a monument of 19th century ornithology, partly due to the high quality of the images and the printing techniques employed.

One-and-half centuries after John Gould, artist Jacques Grégoire (1961) first travelled through Australia, and was spellbound by the country and its birds. Since his first visit he has systematically and artistically been capturing them on canvas. In Australische Vogels the works of Gould and Grégoire have been brought together for the first time. Both artists employ a unique style, and yet the images complement each other, and together pay tribute to the birds of Australia. A beautiful release for lovers of birds, travel, and art. Produced in collaboration with the library of the Dutch zoo of Artis, Amsterdam.
