About this book

This field guide complements the annual field meeting of the Irish Quaternary Association (IQUA) held in Limerick and the Shannon area, September 19th–21st 2014.

An examination of the 35 field guide titles produced by IQUA since 1978 revealed that Limerick and the Shannon Estuary Region had never featured. Limerick City sits astride the River Shannon some 100 km inland, and is tidal. Its orientation to the prevailing weather and the location of a hydro-electric power station, just two kilometers upstream combined with excessive rainfall, the highest Spring Tide ever experienced (7.5 m), a sustained 60-knot south westerly wind, a water surge or ‘bore’ wave, and greater than normal volumes of water coming down the river served, together, to rapidly submerge large parts of the city in February 2014. This phenomenal flood event precipitated questions about the geological, Quaternary, hydrological, vegetation and human history in the area by the IQUA community and was the genesis for the location of the 2014 Field Meeting in the region.

The region and field sites are covered by sheets 57, 58, 63, 64 and 65 of the 1:50,000 OSI Discovery Series Maps.
