NHBS Grapevine - The Best of Our Books & Equipment
#22
7th April 2016

About Us
In this edition: The Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) is the leading organisation for the identification of British and Irish plants, with a history going back 180 years. Their series of botanical Handbooks has been going a little less than that, but they have a pedigree of their own and are invaluable for botanists and enthusiasts who want to identify the more difficult plants. The latest in the series covers the evening primroses (Oenothera).

Other highlights: A recent book surveying the conservation status of the birds of Namibia inspired this round-up of data books, atlases and avifaunas from around the world. Our equipment highlight is the Song Meter SM4 Acoustic Recorder - ideal for recording birdsong in the field. New books include New Naturalist Volume 131: Shallow Seas of Northwest Europe; Tim Birkhead on eggs; field guides to mammals in Borneo and reptiles in Micronesia; and four new listings in the Flora Argentina series. Check out Leon's new catalogue listings for not-to-be-missed publications on the Ants of Africa and Madagascar and the mysterious phenomenon of venoms in nature.

Avifaunas and atlases: a world of birds
An important segment of the ornithology publishing we stock or list here at NHBS are the avifaunas, data books and bird distribution atlases from countries and regions around the world. Many of these are laboured over by dedicated researchers, and based on data from surveys lasting years at a time. They add substantial value to the science of bird conservation.
The following list contains some of the most popular and interesting ornithology reference books from around the world.

Birds to Watch in Namibia: Red, Rare and Endemic Species
Birds to Watch in Namibia: Red, Rare and Endemic Species
Birds to Watch in Namibia provides a detailed survey of the avian conservation status of the country, making it Namibia's Red Data Book of birds. Seventy-one of the 687 recorded species are Threatened or Near-threatened according to IUCN criteria and the book also cover's Namibia's 16 endemics, three of which are on the Red List.
Messengers of climate change
Bird populations around the world are responding consistently to predicted climate change trends. This new research, led by Durham University, UK, and published in the journal Science, confirms expectations that birds are powerful indicators of climate change.

Tiger habitat loss slows worldwide
Yale Environment 360 reports on a new study that offers hope for tiger conservation. Habitat loss has slowed down so that only 8% of global tiger habitat disappeared between 2001 and 2014. Populations in Nepal and India have increased substantially.

The programme has been announced for the State of the World's Plants Symposium, which will take place at Kew on 11th–12th May 2016. Speakers from around the world will present on topics across six major themes in plant science.
