#17
21st January 2016

About Us
Backlist Bargans 2016
In this edition: Bird Families of the World, one of the most keenly-awaited publications of the past few months, has now arrived in stock and will appeal to bird-lovers at all levels of experience. If you are a collector, Lynx Edicions publish the Handbooks series (to the birds and the mammals of the world), and this outstanding synopsis is a worthy adjunct to these genre-defining works.

Other highlights: Introducing to the NHBS range the publications of Ireland's National Biodiversity Data Centre; the reintroduction of griffon vultures in Kresna Gorge in Bulgaria is the topic of this interview with conservationist Emilian Stoynov, and you can read the documentation in a new book about the project; a landmark text for policy makers in the realms of biodiversity and climate change from the 119-nation BirdLife International Partnership; a stirring and intimate account of twenty years tracking the Siberian tiger; and all the usual Grapevine favourites.

Bird Families of the World: An Invitation to the Spectacular Diversity of Birds
Bird Families of the World: A Guide to the Spectacular Diversity of Birds is a single-volume synopsis of bird diversity aimed at serious bird enthusiasts at all levels. Colour-illustrated spreads feature comprehensive distribution maps, information on biology and conservation status, and a review of recent ideas about family relationships. Using minimal technical terminology, this family-by-family overview provides a solid foundation for understanding avian diversity.
National Biodiversity Data Centre (Ireland)
We are now holding stock of an important range of biodiversity publications from Ireland's National Biodiversity Data Centre. Established in 2007 by Ireland's Heritage Council, the Data Centre collates, manages, analyses and disseminates data on Ireland’s biodiversity.

The range consists currently of the pocket sized identification swatches (see below), an Identification Guide to Ireland's Grasses (left), and a new atlas of The Stonefly (Plecoptera) of Ireland (above) which will be published this month.
Identification Swatches
There are plans to expand the range of swatches over the coming years, along with other exciting publishing projects, so keep an eye on their page to find out what's new, or make sure you are checking the newly catalogued items in each issue of the Grapevine.

Census finds unprotected waterbird sites
The China Coastal Waterbird Census, run solely by volunteers, has published its third report from a decade long survey of the country's coastal wetlands. The census has made important discoveries about bird populations in this key segment of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, including the discovery of 10 sites that could benefit from proper protection.

UK Biodiversity Indicators 2015
The Joint Nature Conservation Commission (JNCC) has released the latest report on the UK's biodiversity indicators. Containing the most recent data available, the report demonstrates how the UK indicators remain relevant to new international goals and targets.

23 new Marine Conservation Zones
Earlier this week the UK government announced the designation of 23 new Marine Conservation Zones as the second part of a three-phase process. Our local marine wildlife gets a look in with two new protected sites on the North Devon coast.
