Dicotyledonous Plants of Uttar Pradesh is an extension of the check-list comprising 1265 taxa of monocotyledonous plants of Uttar Pradesh, publishing during 1994-1999 by Shri B.P. Uniyal of the Botanical Survey of India, Northern Circle. Dehra Dun and his team. It is based on the comprehensive survey of the plant resources of the state by the scientists of the Central and Northern Circle of BSI at Allahabad and Dehra Dun respectively and critical evaluation of collections and publications of other eminent plant explorers and botanists.
The present check-list includes enumeration of 4087 species under 1308 genera belonging to 185 families. The family Asteraceae, with 450 taxa, is the largest dicot family in the state, whereas Polygonum with 50 species (including infraspecific categories) is the largest genus. In Dicotyledonous Plants of Uttar Pradesh, all the species with up to date nomenclature have been dealt under the corresponding families which have been arranged according to Bentham and Hooker's (1862-1883) system of classification with some modifications as per recent concept. Whereas the genera under a family and species under a genus have been arranged alphabetically. The correct botanical name is followed by its citation and basionym wherever applicable. The status of the taxa, viz. endemic, threatened, etc., as per record of the literature has also been mentioned at places. The plants which are in cultivation have also been dealt in the text.
