The Batbox Duet is a dual-mode bat detector comprising both heterodyne and frequency division methods. The headphones and speakers give the heterodyne output whilst the line-out allows both detection methods to be recorded. With a stereo recorder, frequency division will be recorded in the left channel and heterodyne in the right. This is a very useful feature which allows you to simultaneously view and listen to call when conducting computer analysis. (If a mono recorder is used, only frequency division will be recorded). The Duet also uses frequency amplitude detection which allows post-recording analysis of peak frequencies.
This robust unit has the frequency dial conveniently located on the side of the unit which makes it ideal for single-handed operation. The large LCD back-lit display is extremely accurate and easy to read at all light levels. There is also a voice commentary button for annotating recordings.
To connect the Duet to a recorder (see Recommended Accessories below) you will also need a 3.5mm jack to jack cable. For analysis of recorded calls Batbox BatScan software has been optimised for use with the Duet.
Heterodyne bat detectors are great for beginners and offer immediate identification of bats in the field. You select the ultrasonic frequency range to listen to just like tuning in radio. On the Duet, the calls can be heard in heterodyne mode using both the speakers and the headphones.
Frequency Division detection is a `broadband' method as the entire ultrasonic range is heard/recorded simultaneously (in contrast to a Heterodyne detector, which is sensitive only to a limited range of frequencies at each time). Calls are transformed in real time and by listening to the full range of frequencies you won't miss a bat while tuned into the wrong frequency. Frequency Division output can be used for sound analysis of recorded calls.
