About this book

Language: German

The approximately 80,000 trees in the streets, parks and the Old and New Botanical Garden make the Swiss city of Zürich a green city where it is good living, working and studying. Zürich trees are not only beautiful but are also worthwhile knowing more about. Species diversity is large: the young Chinese paperbark maple (Acer griseum) in the park of the city nursery, its reddish brown bark unrolling like genuine cinnamon, but not exuding cinnamon scent – the Asian tea apple tree (Malus hupehensis) in the New Botanical Garden, whose innumerable tiny red apple fruits in autumn delight visitors in the winter and the waxwings from the far north to attract – the native Linden in the Bahnhofstrasse, which spread their distinctive fragrance in May.

This guide through the trees of Zürich leads from native and exotic to young and old, to known and unknown trees. Richly illustrated with overview and detailed photographs, it reports on biology, history and cultural significance of some fifty featured trees.
