About this book

Language: Danish

Periodically volcanoes attract much attention: they stop air traffic, they destroy farmland for miles, they cover cities and roads with lava, they affect the weather – and they fascinate with their beautiful violence.

In this book geologist Paul Martin Holm from the University of Copenhagen describes volcanic formation and activity, the prediction of volcanic eruptions and the harm caused by eruptions. First of all, however, he presents a series of famous volcanoes and volcanic eruptions from Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland and the many volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands, to Vesuvius and the mighty volcanoes that arose in connection with the North Atlantic formation.

The book is an updated and expanded version of a book first published in 2012. New in the second edition include the story of the incredible lava field Holuhraun, created by the volcanic eruption in 2014-2015, which is the strongest that Iceland has experienced since 1783. The author also describes the eruption of the the volcano Picos on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde in 2014-15.
