The John Muir Bibliography [NHBS list]

John Muir (1838-1914) was a Scottish born naturalist, philosopher and writer who migrated to the United States in 1849 with his family at the age of 11. Through his letters, essays and books, he was an early advocate for wilderness conservation. He co-founded the Sierra Club, which is a prominent conservation organisation in the USA to this day, and his campaigning let to the creation of Yosemite National Park in California. Muir was also personally involved in the creation of Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon national parks. His writings were infused with a spirituality and enthusiasm that influenced and inspired readers, including presidents and congressmen, to take action to preserve large areas of natural landscape.

This curated list collects the currently available versions of John Muir's books in one convenient place. His books have been published in various editions over the year but many of these are not available anymore. We have also included a few bundles here, as not all books mentioned below are currently available separately.

He published six books during his life, all describing explorations of natural settings:
- Picturesque California (1888)
- The Mountains of California (1894)
- Stickeen: An Adventure with a Dog and a Glacier (1897)
- Our National Parks (1901)
- My First Summer in the Sierra (1911)
- The Yosemite (1912)
There was also the autobiographical The Story of My Boyhood and Youth (1913)

Another four were published posthumously:
- Travels in Alaska (1915)
- A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf (1916)
- The Cruise of the Corwin (1917)
- Steep Trails (1918)
