This category deals with all members of the taxonomic superorder Xenarthra. The surviving members – armadillos, sloths and anteaters – are all found in South America.
The armadillo is easily recognisable because of its leathery armour, that runs in bands across its back. The sloths and anteaters together make up the taxonomic order Pilosa, and both sport specialised claws. The sloths use theirs for climbing and sleeping, which they do hanging upside down from a tree branch. Sloths are notoriously slow, though can make a swift escape when threatened by predators. Anteaters, finally, use their claws to destroy the nests of ants and termites. They have an unusually long and agile tongue, covered in tiny hooks, that they use to lick up their prey.
