Elephants

Big, grey and bearing large ivory tusks and a remarkably prehensile trunk, elephants are unmistakable. The Elephantidae is the last remaining family in the order Proboscidea, which includes now extinct giants such as mammoths and mastodons.

Home to sub-Saharan Africa, and South and Southeast Asia, these large mammals are under continued threat of hunting and poaching, as ivory remains a prized material on the black market.
