The butterfly fauna of the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot in peninsular India, is unique because it is diverse and yet exhibits low levels of endemism. The butterfly assemblage in the Western Ghats contains both Oriental and African elements which have dispersed to give rise to the unique community. The authors, both affirmed butterfly enthusiasts who have explored this region at length, here present the first butterfly guide to this region. The guide is mainly aimed at students and butterfly enthusiasts but the information about natural history will be helpful to the most seasoned butterfly observers too. The initial pages describe the life history and behavior along with the morphology of butterflies. The identity features and comparison plates will help the enthusiasts in identifying their images positively and accurately. The authros have included as much new information known and as many images as possible.
