About this book

Language: English

This book has its origins in the author's desire to know more about the numerous butterflies they encountered in the field when engaged in their interest in ornithology. As it was not possible to carry rare and valuable butterfly books into the field, the illustrations were created as their personal do-it-yourself field guide. The species included are therefore the common and uncommon forms they were most likely to encounter when bird watching; the rarer species having been excluded. For ease of recognition and identification they have ignored the scientific grouping of families or genus, and grouped their life-size illustrations according to the size of the butterfly and its most prominent colour, with the upper wing on the left and attached to the body, and the under wing to the right. The authors have selected 150 species, of which about 100 have been seen and identified by the authors in the field.
