The official United Nations version of Agenda 21, the worldwide environmental programme negotiated and adopted at the Earth Summit, Rio, June 1992. Seven themes organise Agenda 21's programs, focusing on transition to sustainable life on Earth. The themes are: 1: Revitalizing economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability. 2: Improving quality of life while eliminating patterns of production and consumption that contribute to Earth's deterioration. 3: Managing urbanisation and its environmental repercussions. 4: Efficiently using natural resources: land, water, energy, forests, etc. 5: Sharing and protecting atmospheric and oceanic (`transboundary') resources. 6: Managing chemicals and waste to maintain a clean world. 7: Mandating broad public participation in realising sustainable development. Several later sections examine implementing and financing the transition.
Agenda 21 - Programme of Action for Sustainable Development; Section 1 Social and Economic Dimensions; Section 2 Conservation and Management of Resources for Development; Section 3 Strengthening the Role of Major Groups; Section 4 Means of Implementation; Statement of Forest Principles.
