In totality, the genus Ceratium has the highest number of species followed by Peridinium, Protoperidinium, Gymnodinium, Prorocentrum and Gonyaulax. Three of these, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Gonyaulax polygramma, and Prorocentrum micans, are red tide species.
