Brazil has a rich herpetofauna, with 941 species of amphibians and 732 species of reptiles recorded. In view of this wealth, it is fundamental to study and better know this diversity, and this book seeks to fulfill that aim. Filled with illustrations, presenting 280 colour photographs representing various species of Brazilian herpetofauna, the book also contains a very rich bibliographical survey of these animals, with over 1500 publications cited. Among the topics covered are: importance and conservation of herpetofauna, classification and distribution of amphibian and reptile families in Brazil, with references to works on taxonomy and phylogeny of genera, and help with species identification (key references and guides for groups in each region of the country), sampling and collecting methods, ecology of anuran amphibians, lizards and snakes, addressing of various aspects of the life of these animals, such as occurrence in habitats, feeding, period of activity, reproduction, predators and mechanisms of defense. It also deals with field care and conducts, with safety tips for accident prevention, ophidism, dealing with the action of snake venom, symptoms in the victims, epidemiological aspects, prevention and first aid, and also legends and beliefs, dealing with the human imagination around amphibians and reptiles.
