Aquitaine, one of the 27 Regions of France in the south-western part of the country, is a large region that harbours diverse environments: From coastal areas, ponds and sand dunes in the Pyrenees, through to the karst landscapes of Quercy, the forests of the Dordogne and the Landes pine forest, the largest planted forest in Europe.

A quarter century after the publication of the last breeding bird atlas of Aquitaine (1987), here is a new regional synthesis, based on the results of a field survey from 2009 to 2013. It summarises the evolution and conservation status of bird populations of the five departments that make up the region of Aquitaine: Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The aim of this project is to make accessible to as many readers the in-depth knowledge on the current state of the avifauna from a qualitative point of view, but also a quantitative and a prospective one.

The realisation of this book is the result of the collaboration between volunteer associations and their involvement in improving knowledge of regional avifauna. More than a thousand people have contributed to the groundwork by searching for the most relevant reproductive indices, writing species monographs, and in meetings exchanging and consolidating information on this remarkable natural heritage that are the breeding birds of Aquitaine. It is a unique example of civic knowledge in Aquitaine, which is brought to live with this book.

L'Aquitaine est une vaste région qui présente une grande diversité de milieux : du littoral et des étangs arrière-dunaires au massif des Pyrénées, en passant par les paysages karstiques du Quercy, les forêts de la partie limousine de la Dordogne et la pinède landaise, plus grande forêt plantée d'Europe.

Un quart de siècle après le dernier atlas des oiseaux nicheurs d'Aquitaine (1987), voici une synthèse régionale inédite, qui s'appuie sur les résultats d'une enquête de terrain allant de 2009 à 2013. Elle fait le constat de l'évolution et de l'état de conservation des populations d'oiseaux des cinq départements qui composent la région Aquitaine : la Dordogne, la Gironde, les Landes, le Lot-et-Garonne et les Pyrénées-Atlantiques. L'ambition de ce projet est de rendre accessible au plus grand nombre la connaissance approfondie de l'état actuel du peuplement avifaunistique d'un point de vue qualitatif, quantitatif mais aussi prospectif.

La réalisation de cet ouvrage est le fruit de la collaboration de bénévoles associatifs et de leur implication dans l'amélioration de la connaissance de l'avifaune régionale. Plus d'un millier de passionnés se sont investis sur le terrain à la recherche des indices de reproduction les plus pertinents, dans la rédaction des monographies et lors de réunions d'échanges pour consolider leurs informations sur ce patrimoine naturel si remarquable que représentent les oiseaux nicheurs d'Aquitaine. C'est une expérience unique de connaissance citoyenne en Aquitaine, qui trouve ici une juste concrétisation.
