The mollusc family Ovulidae Fleming 1828 is introduced. A systematical reorganization of this family and related groups, which are at the moment attached to this family, is tried to make especially on the base of the fossil forms, recently described protoconchs, the soft parts, the shell structure and the radulae. All described and distinct species are listed. Furthermore, the species, which were established since 1973, are valued. The ovulid genus Delonovolva Cate, 1973a is considered to be synonymous with Cuspivolva Cate, 1973a, which has page precedence, because the shell morphology of the type species – Ovulum formosum A. Adams & Reeve, 1848 – corresponds with features of the latter genus. Two species are referred to the Cuspivolva, one to the genus Turbovula Cate, 1973a and a further five to the genus Neosimnia Fischer, 1884 that also fits better with the zoogeography. A large number species are newly combined with its respective genus because of the shell morphology.
