The mollusk family Triviidae Troschel, 1863 is introduced. An attempt is made to systematically reorganize this family on the base of the radula, inner organs and the soft parts but also the fossil forms, the shell structure and the zoogeography. All described and distinct species are listed. Furthermore, the species, which were established since 1971 for fossil species and 1979 for recent ones, are valued.
The triviid genus Galeatrivia Cate, 1979 is considered to be synonymous with Triviella Jousseaume, 1884 because of lack of differences in the animal and shell morphology. The same has been done with the genera Fossatrivia Iredale, 1931, Nototrivia Schilder, 1932, Pseudotrivia Schilder, 1936, Willungia Powell, 1938 and Robertotrivia Cate, 1979 which were kept as junior synonyms of Trivellona Iredale, 1931; with Sulcotrivia Schilder, 1933 as a synonym of Niveria Jousseaume, 1884; Discotrivia Cate, 1979 as a synonym of Pusula Jousseaume, 1884 and with Decoriatrivia Cate 1979 and Circumscapula Cate 1979 as synonyms of Dolichupis Iredale, 1930. A new genus Austrotrivia gen. nov. is introduced especially on the base of the radula morphology and a new species Semitrivia tsuchidai sp. nov. is described and briefly discussed with the other members of the genus.
